Holiday Gifts for Senior Dogs

December 1, 2020

Season’s Greetings! Over the next few weeks, many people will be picking out the perfect gifts for their loved ones. Don’t forget to pick up something for your canine companion! Fido definitely deserves something special. Of course, your shopping list will look different for a puppy than it would for an older dog. Pooches in their golden years have some very specific needs. A Black Hills, SD veterinarian suggests a few things for senior dogs below.

Beds

Making sure that Fido can sleep properly is very important! Your canine pal won’t get good rest on a thin pad. We recommend orthopedic beds for older dogs, because of the extra support they offer.

Paw Care

Your furry pal’s paws are crucial to his health and well-being. Long nails can be quite problematic in senior pets. Fido may adjust his stride to compensate for the discomfort, which can put a lot of strain on his bones and joints. Clippers with sensors are a great gift! You can also get your pup paw balm, or perhaps some booties.

Elevated Dishes

Dogs have to strain their necks and back to eat off the floor, which can be quite uncomfortable. (This is one reason that older pooches sometimes eat lying down.) Raised dishes may be much more comfortable for your four-legged friend.

Ramps or Stairs

As your four-legged friend ages, he’ll start having trouble climbing stairs. Pet ramps or stairs can help him stay mobile. Fido may also appreciate these when he needs to get in and out of the car or, if he’s allowed, on and off beds and couches.

Supplements

Your furry friend’s nutritional needs will change as he ages. Fido may benefit from certain vitamins or supplements. Glucosamine, Omega 3 and 6 oils, and fish oils often recommended for older pooches. Ask your vet for more information.

Doggy Massage

It’s common knowledge that massages are relaxing, but did you know that they are also good for you? They can release tight muscles, improve circulation, reduce pain, and increase range of motion. These things are just as beneficial for our canine buddies as they are for people! Consider booking Fido a session with a pet masseuse.
