Assembling a Pet Emergency Kit

November 15, 2013

You never know when an emergency situation might strike—as such, it’s best to be prepared, and one great way of doing that is to keep a pet emergency kit on hand. Follow these tips from your Black Hills veterinarian on what to include.

Medical Records

It might not be the first thing you think of putting in an emergency kit, but it’s one of the most important. In the event you have to evacuate your home and go to a shelter, you’ll need your pet’s updated medical records, vaccination records, and possibly even proof of ownership. Include these items in a water-tight bag.

Food and Water

Put some miniature bottled waters in the kit—in some emergencies, finding fresh water can be a problem. Pack a healthy supply of your pet’s food as well. You don’t know how long you might have to be away from home. Canned food is best as it will take longer to go bad.

Medicine

Any medications your pet is on will need to go in the kit. If possible, obtain a bulk supply of the medicines your pet needs to pack away.

Leash

A leash is an essential item to bring with you. In severe weather situations, pets might become frightened and try to bolt. You don’t want your pet running out into the adverse conditions, so securing him on a leash will be a life-saving precaution.

First Aid Essentials

Pack first-aid essentials like gauze to bandage wounds, disinfecting materials like hydrogen peroxide, and nail clippers. Consult your Black Hills veterinarian on other first-aid items to include.

Bedding and Toys

Since you don’t know how long you might be away from home, be sure to bring your pet’s bed and some of his toys. You’ll want to create a small slice of home in whatever environment you’re in so your dog feels more comfortable. Consider bringing some soft towels, extra litter for your cat, and a few favorite toys.
