Flying With Fido

December 15, 2021

Happy Holidays! This season is shaping up to be much busier than last year’s was. And when it comes to traveling, many people like to bring their dogs with them …. even on planes. Is that really a good idea? A vet talks about flying with Fido below.

Think It Over

For many dogs, flying can be quite stressful. The concept of flying is something Fido doesn’t really understand, and he can get really scared by the noise and vibration. Being boarded, instead, will likely make your canine buddy happier and more comfortable. Size is also something to consider here. A small dog will have a much easier flight sitting in your lap compared to what a big pooch will experience flying in cargo. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Have Paperwork

Always have copies of Fido’s registration and vaccination records with you. You can keep paper copies in your flight bag. And it’s also a good idea to take pictures of these documents so you can email them to yourself. That way you’ll have them in both your inbox and phone gallery, and can access them anywhere online.

Go Direct

While direct flights may cost a bit more, they’re much easier on your furry pal. Try to avoid layovers. If that’s not something you can do, book the flight with the shortest stops.

Do Some Research

Airlines may vary quite widely on their policies for pet travel. You’ll definitely want to read the fine print in this area! Keep in mind that some airlines have better safety records than others for pet travel. Do some reading before you book your flight. Also, be sure to ask your vet about medication options that can calm Fido to make the trip easier on him.

Food

Fido’s usual food and treats may not be available at your destination. Consider shipping some to your destination. If you’re staying at a hotel or AirBnB, don’t forget to coordinate with them or use a mail store.

ID

Ensure your canine pal has been microchipped, and that the registry information is up to date. Also remember that Fido should be wearing ID tags. If he’ll be traveling in a crate, be sure to put an ID on that as well. Luggage tags and mailing labels work well for this. Put some clear tape over it to make it waterproof.
